The Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Society presents award-winning Florida author Rick Kilby as tells the story about the life and work of Joy Postle (1894–1989), a prolific artist and nature lover whose work documented the beauty of Florida’s environment in the twentieth century. After moving to rural Marion County during the Great Depression, Postle supported herself and her husband through her artistic talents, teaching music and art classes, selling paintings, and earning occasional mural commissions.
Both Postle and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings rejected “postcard” versions of Florida, choosing instead to find beauty in cypress swamps and pine scrubs. Despite their preference for rural lifestyles, both women successfully navigated the treacherous waters of high society, and Postle performed her popular “Glamour Birds” program at clubhouses around the state. Rawlings and Postle were truly birds of a feather, each finding her own version of paradise in the Florida wilds.
